FAQ: Questions & Answers
Reserved Parking
Yes. On a first-paid-first-reserved basis, a few of you may reserve some parking spots. - Responding to requests from prior events, the organizing committee will have a very limited number of reserved parking spaces available at Rogers Plaza and at Centerpoint Mall as a service to some Metro Cruisers®.
- The spaces are $10 each and must be reserved in groups of 10 spaces or more.
- No more than 25 spaces will be reserved to any one person or group.
- Refunds of these fees are not allowed after Saturday, August 16.
- Re-renting these reserved spaces to anyone else for more than $10 per space is prohibited.
- There are areas at each mall that need to be set aside for traffic lanes, event displays, customer parking, employee parking and public safety vehicles.
- There will only be about 140 total reserved spaces available at Rogers Plaza and a similar number at Centerpoint Mall.
- That is less than 8% of the total parking spaces at Rogers Plaza and less than 3% of the total spaces at Centerpoint Mall.
- (Rogers Plaza has about 1,800 spaces total and Centerpoint Mall has about 3,500 total.)
- The rest of the parking spaces at these locations are open and are free of charge.
- Many other locations are available all along 28th Street, if it is OK with the property owner for you to park there.
- Reservations will be made on a first-paid/first-reserved basis.
- When they are gone, they are gone.
- Just over half are reserved already.
- The Committee will have volunteer Event Crew cordon off your reserved area and save the spaces for you until 9:00 AM Saturday morning (Aug 23).
- You or your representative must show up with your car and your Reserved Parking Credential prior to 9:00 AM.
- It will be up to you to save any of your remaining spaces after 9:00 AM.
- At 9:00 AM, the Event Crew will abandon the area and the spaces will become available for free "Stampede Parking" and your reserved parking fees will be forfeit.

Reserved Parking
You need to check your sources on that one because someone has given you some incorrect information. - We are making a very limited number of parking spaces available on a reserved parking basis as a courtesy to some Cruisers as a result of suggestions that we received from prior year events.
- If this works well this year, we may expand it a little next year; if not, we'll probably drop it next year
- Out of some 12,000-plus Special Interest Cars that participated in the Cruise in 2007, we will have fewer than 300 reserved parking spaces in total at two shopping malls set aside as reserved
- That is less than 0.15% of the total spaces available on 28th Street and less than 6% of the total spaces available at the two main Cruise venues.
- All the rest of the parking at the Metro Cruise® this year is what 28th Street shopping is famous for - acres and acres and acres of FREE Parking!

Overnight Parking
We do not recommend overnight parking to reserve spots and cars that are parked in the pre-registered or event needed spots will be asked to move.
Some lots may be subject to overnight parking prohibitions. We aren't 'patrolling' any lots for property protection and any cars parked overnight will be at the owner's risk. The police departments will be out, though, looking for unruly behavior.

Registration
No pre-registration of vehicles is necessary! The 4th Annual 28th Street Metro Cruise® is an open event and welcomes all vehicles to join in the fun! Owners are welcome to participate in the areas of their interest. As special interest gathering points are identified they will be added to this site. A limited number of reserved parking areas are available to clubs with 10 or more vehicles at a rate of $10 per spot for Saturday only. These areas are on a first-paid, first-served basis and may include areas in Rogers Plaza or Centerpointe Mall. Call the Chamber at 616-531-5990 for more details.

Official organization of Metro Cruise®
The 28th Street Metro Cruise ® is a project and activity of the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
We have a large and excited Committee full of very motivated people! We all have different assignments for various aspects of this large and exciting Car Show!
Committee members may and will be engaging in conversations with all kinds of vendors and will start preliminary negotiations, get prices, help determine quantities, etc. That's a Big Part of our individual duties.
However, ONLY the Chamber President or the current Chamber Board of Directors Chairman may actually bind the organization, sign contracts or issue Purchase Orders, which will only happen after committee action.
|
|
Wyoming/Kentwood Chamber Involvement
The Chamber utilizes the Metro Cruise® to put the spotlight on the vital 28th Street and surrounding business districts, tapping into West Michigan's 100-year old love affair with the automobile! The Chamber, itself a non-profit organization, hopes to raise some funds for its own activities as well as the new Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber Foundation.
Other area Non-profit organizations may also apply to provide volunteer help for the event and earn community recognition along with the chance to earn some operating revenue.

Event Proceeds
You know, you are absolutely correct about our Car Owners! We love every one of you and really admire the work you have put in to your gorgeous cars! We have heard this same phrase a number of times and believe it's originating from a single source. Your source is wrong. Please consider this, - Very little is charged for at the Metro Cruise®. In fact, it's probably the least expensive thing you will do all summer long.
- The Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit association funded exclusively by the voluntary contributions of businesses and other organizations in the area, or by event fund-raisers.
- The Chamber's mission is Building Better Communities by Building Better Businesses.
- The Chamber is not a part of government and does not receive any funding at all from any government source.
- The Chamber has organized the Metro Cruise® as fun way to get the community to turn out and support the Local Businesses in the area in order to stimulate the local economy and help our local Jobs Providers, well - provide Jobs!
- Please support our Local Businesses with your business!
- Please thank and support the super companies that are Official Metro Cruise® Sponsors this year, especially! They made this event possible!
- The Chamber of Commerce invests a huge amount of TIME in preparing for and running the Cruise
- About 1,500 Staff Hours per year
- About 6,300 Volunteer Hours per year
- The Volunteer Committees meet twice each week from January through August
- The Chamber hopes to raise a small amount of money to fund its many activities in the area
- The average Visitor and Car Owner to the Metro Cruise® spends an average Grand Total of 11 CENTS on Cruise-related merchandise or fees.
- The Chamber, in fact, after organizing and operating the Metro Cruise® in 2005, 2006 and 2007, has LOST about $10,000 in cash on the Cruise.
- It is expensive to organize and operate a moving automotive event in five different localities simultaneously and do it safely so that all may enjoy it - and so that we may do it again the following year.
- If it wasn't for the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce that has invested heavily in this really awesome event, there would be no Metro Cruise®!

Hotels and Restaurants
One thing that you'll love about the Cruise - in addition to all of the awesome CARS that will be there - is the Fantastic 28th Street Shopping and Dining! There are many, many hotels and restaurants throughout the entire area, too - lots of them right on 28th Street! Along with many concessionaires at the various event venues, there will be an Entertainment East Event at Pierhead Grill and Tavern at 6250 28th Street SE in Cascade on both Days of the event, offering food and beverages. We are also offering a special "Taste of the Cruise" book with savings for local area restaurants. These will be available at the main cruise venues. Check out the "Taste of the Cruise" section of this website. Check out the listing of Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber Member Hotels and Restaurants and begin making your plans now!

|
Printed Program
We will produce an Official magazine style Souvenir Program for this event. They will be available at NO CHARGE at all of the Official Display Areas along 28th Street. We are also making arrangements to distribute the program in The Grand Rapids Press during the week of the cruise.

Car Clubs and Groups
Your best bet is to get there early Saturday morning. Show opens at 9:00 AM. Remember, that 28th Street has LOTS of shopping centers with LOTS of parking spaces!
You won't really be able to "Save Parking Spaces" by cordoning off an area once an area begins to get full, but you can before it's full.
Our Event Crew is being instructed to fill all the lots with appropriate display vehicles as orderly and as soon as they arrive. If your car gets there and there is an open space to park and display, you can have that spot. It's first-come-first-served seating. If you have saved spaces for other Cruiser Friends of yours and other Cruisers (your "Not-Yet-Friends") are there to park and display, our Event Crew will need to give them the spaces you are holding open.

|
Burn Outs
"Burn-Outs" are not allowed.
Please Note: We have been advised by ALL state, county and local law enforcement agencies that "Burn-Outs" on the street are illegal and won't be permitted. BE ADVISED THAT THERE IS A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR "Burn-Outs" AT THIS EVENT and that ALL "Burn-Outs" WILL RESULT IN TRAFFIC CITATIONS BEING ISSUED, probably a Major Offense for Careless Driving.
The police realize that some of you are veteran drivers and that you may have the experience, skill and knowledge of your vehicle to safely execute a "Burn-Out". However, the 17-year old in his brother's borrowed Camaro behind you will be encouraged to LEARN how to do a "Burn-Out" by watching yours and others. The loss of control by that inexperienced driver would likely be tragic.
THEREFORE, ALL "Burn-Outs" are forbidden and won't be tolerated. No Warnings will be issued by Police. Only Tickets.

Volunteers
It takes a LOT of great volunteers to make the Metro Cruise® happen! Whether you would like to serve on a planning committee or work the day of the event, we have a place for you. There is more information about how to volunteer and be involved in the cruise within the Event Crew section of this web site. For additional information, contact the Chamber at 616-531-5990.

|
Handicapped visitors to the cruise events
All of the venues the Chamber is operating are on flat, paved surfaces, such as parking lots. They will accomdate wheel chairs nicely. Each venue also is equipped with Porta-Potties, including those that are designed for Handicapper use.

Medical Services
METRO HEALTH HOSPITAL has agreed to staff and equip two (2) medical tents set up along the route. They'll be available for basic First Aid. We also plan to have a couple ambulances in the area, too. Greater Grand Rapids boasts 4 high-level, acute-care hospitals, if needed, too.
|
28th Street Traffic
We thought that it would, but actually, the MI Dept of Transportation tells us the traffic count on 28th Street has actually INCREASED by over 3% since the freeway opened in late 2004.
The amount of TRUCK Traffic and CROSS-METRO-AREA traffic has dropped significantly on 28th Street, so it just LOOKS like there is less traffic. It still averages over 50,000 cars per day. People are still all over 28th Street and DOING BUSINESS with the businesses there!
On Cruise Day, however, Friday and Saturday, are two of the (normally) quietest traffic days of the year around here, which gives us ideal conditions for the event! With the great turnout the Cruise has produced, and especially during Saturday's "Grand Cruise" at the 5 o'clock hour, we expect slow moving traffic and lots of congestion along 28th street. Pull up a lawn chair and enjoy the great parade of cruisers! We ask non-cruise drivers as well as Cruise participants to follow thoughtful and safe behavior during the event.
